when i open internet site, task manager shows two instances of ie8 are open, one of which hogs memory from the ie8 task which actually opens the site I want to be on.

Hi eilatoo! :)

The following should be a registry setting of MS internet explorer 8 ONLY.

I did not check if it could work for the following versions of MSIE.

  • Open regedit
  • navigate to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
  • inside the panel on the right, search TabProcGrowth
  • set it to 0
  • if TabProcGrowth does not exist: create a new key DWORD and give it that name--> TabProcGrowth <-- then set it to 0

Looking forward for your kind feedback.

Thank you so much, it definitely worked.  Such a simple solution (if one has the expertise), however, so elusive if one doesn't. I'd been trying to find the solution for some time now and only your suggestion has worked.
