Loss of Sound gnerallyand unable to to run U-Tube clips

Had some Malware recently - since hopefully eradicated using Ad- Aware and also Spybot - and in all the fun & games have managed to 'lose' all sound and when i try to run U-tube (etc) type of clips they start - run jerkily for a few seconds and then freeze. Short of an expensive reload of Windows (Still happily using WinXP - SP3 !) is there anything anyone can suggest please?(it's not faulty Speakers by the way!)

(I do have a Restore Point from way back in Autumn last year, but have never used that facility as someone reckoned that they could be problematic??)
