Blocking Internet Explorer Remotely

Compared to Windows Server, the standard edition of Windows 8 limits what actions you can take on computers connected to your network. On Server, you can lock down applications on remote computers in your domain, but the consumer release of Windows 8 enables you to only modify the behavior of programs on the local PC. If you want to restrict someone, such as your child, from accessing the Internet on another computer on the network but don't have an administrative account on that PC, you can use the access controls on your router to block ports 80 and 443 -- ports Internet Explorer requires for establishing a connection to the Web.

Tips & Warnings

To prevent others from reverting your changes, set a custom password on the router. For Linksys, select "Administration" and then "Management"; for D-Link, click "Tools" and then "Admin"; for Netgear, select "Set Password" under Maintenance. Enter the new password into the appropriate field.

The steps to set up access restrictions on a TRENDnet are almost identical to those on D-Link. Check the product sticker on your TRENDnet for information on logging in to your router, and then follow the same process for D-Link to create a new policy.
