everything has just went sluggish

well i went from a 2 min boot up to around a 6min boot up and all of a shudden my cpu useage is off the roof! games have started crashing, really am at my witts end i have tryed everything, ther only other option i can see is a system reboot. any suggestions would be very welcome. thanks.
