What add-ons are you running? if you have too many "lists" of banned sites in AdBlockPlus, that can slow you;
NoScript can also slow it down, as can any spam filter add-on.
Don't let it start automatically when you start your computer; give the machine time to do its "warming up" (as the other answer puts it) before trying to start Firefox.

Keeping huge history and bookmarks files will also slow it down. Trim these down to ones you actually use. Clear caches on every shutdown.
