  1. Thanks. I had already tried all of that. The problem seemed to get worse since posting the above and led to BSOD and restarts. During the last crash there was a message about not being able to start Windows and then a repair (not restore) was performed by Windows. After that I did a Windows repair from the installation disk. So far that seemed to have fixed the problem (a corrupt system file?).
  2. Once in a while the screen suddenly becomes a series of closely spaced horizontal lines and the computer is frozen. Need to reboot at that point.
