Windows Vista Freezes Up With This Error Message

My Asus laptop has Windows Vista. Since I do not use this as my main computer, I never updated to Windows 7 or 8. But I would still like to use it. The problem is Windows will work for a while and then it freezes up and the little downlaod cirle icon continues to rotate as is it is downloading a web page but never does. I have to do a factory restore to get Windows to work again. Sometimes I can go for a month before this happens and sometimes a few days. Does anyone have an answer
