External Hard Drive 2G0 freezes after ten min when backing up,time out?

I have a Medion Desk Top computer with an external hard drive bay on the top of it connects ok Disk management show healthy drive, when I try to back up on it it freezes after a short time.I once saw a messege saying it had timed out,how do I change the time in reg edit. I have struggled with it for two years on and off,can anyone please help me? thanking you in an ticipation .john
