ok, thanks for the quick reply..appreciate it.. do you have any suggestions as to what disk diagnostic would be useful? Could this problem be a driver issue?

Everytime I boot the computer it runs for a while then I lose the ability to select any icons or the start menu or interact with the computer in anyway. I then do a reset using the soft reboot button. Usually then it would run fine. Although for the last two days even after the 2nd reboot I am no longer able to use the keyboard or the mouse which requires me to do another reset using the soft reboot button on the front of the machine. After this my machine tends to run well ( although not always ).
