    Use Wise Jet Search

    There is a little chance that you placed the lost file somewhere else, but you are not sure where. In that case you will have to search the whole computer. With Wise Jet Search you can find any file in your computer unless the file is hidden or in the Recycle Bin. Users can also choose the file type or type in the keywords to narrow down the search. If you can’t find, read on.

    Try file recovery software

    Even a file that’s no longer in the Recycle Bin may still exist. Windows doesn’t overwrite the actual ones and zeros until another file needs the drive space. That’s why I told you to avoid using the PC as much as possible.

    YouTube only allows users to watch and view videos on their website. Many users want to download their favorite videos to their computer so they can watch them without being connected to the Internet or so they can watch them on other devices. Below are the steps required for downloading and watching YouTube videos on your computer for free.

    Go to http://www.wisevideosuite.com to download Wise Video Downloader.

    Open any YouTube video page and copy the URL of the video you want to download.

    Once this address has been copied, paste that URL into the URL bar and click the Download button.

    Of course if you want to play the videos downloaded in multiple devices like your PC, your pad or smart phone. You are gonna need to convert them into different formats that is playable on these devices. Then the Convert feature comes in handy. It is a link to Wise Video Converter, which you can also download from http://www.wisevideosuite.com. The best thing about this converter is you don’t have to choose which format you need to convert into. Just drag and drop the video files to the corresponding big icons of devices, and then click Convert.

    Notice: Not all the videos can be downloaded by Wise Video Downloader. Statistics show that more than 80% of the video files can be downloaded by this software. Please keep this software updated. By default, Wise Video Downloader will download the 1280*720 pixel video.

    Nowadays, more and more computers are using SSD, some computer users upgrade their HDD to SSD, which brings the question should we defrag an SSD?

    Traditional spinning hard drives have a metric known as Access Time (or Seek Time, which is a slightly different measurement) that refers to the average amount of time it takes for the drive armature to physically reposition the heads so that they can begin reading data from a given sector of the disk (it may be more or less depending on how far the heads have to travel). It should be noted that this latency is measured in milliseconds (thosandths of a second) and is incurred every single time the heads have to be repositioned.

    The whole purpose of defragmentation is to arrange the files in such a way as to make them more or less sequential, so that the heads do not have to be repositioned as much in order to read a file.

    SSD's do not have heads that need to be moved, nor do they have spinning latency. As a result, the access time for every cell in the matrix is equal, and is measured in nanoseconds (billionths of a second). Even if a file is very heavily fragmented, the increased latency to read it is imperceptibly small. Defragging will not improve performance to a noticeable degree.

    Also unlike traditional spinning hard drives, the individual cells in an SSD have a limited number of write cycles before they "wear out". SSDs employ a wear-leveling algorithm to spread out writes to extend the life of the drive. Relocating the same data to a different area of the flash cells waste those write cycles. In this case, defragging can actually reduce the lifespan of the drive.

    So now our concern is what shall we do to increase the lifespan of SSD.

    Below are the 5 most basic and effective ways to improve SSD’s lifespan.
    1. Disable prefetch parameters to increase SSD working life.
    2. Disable Superfetch parameters to increase working life of SSD.
    3. Disable defrag system drive on boot to increase working life of SSD.
    4. Disable auto defrag when idle to increase working life of SSD.
    5. Enable TRIM function to improve working performance of SSD.

    These tweaks may sound a little bit hard for normal users. No biggie, you can make all these setting modifications with one single click. I am not bluffing. Just download Wise Care 365, you can see System Optimizer feature in System Tuneup section. If there is an SSD in your computer, there will be an item called SSD Optimization right below Network Speedup( Unfortunately my computer does not have one, so this item is not shown here). Single click ‘Optimize’, Wise Care 365 will make all the 5 changes I mentioned above along with other optimizing tweaks.

    3. Now click on System or display tab.

    4. Information regarding operating system and some hardware components like graphics card will be shown.

    You can also check all these information with the newly added System Monitor section in Wise Care 365, the good thing about this info in Wise Care 365 is that it is displayed in a detailed manner including almost everything you need to know about your computer.

    Linkin got a reaction from Davindymn in How to Deal with Your File History Backup Drive Is Out Of Space In Windows 8&8.1
    In this tutorial, I will show you how to change your Windows 8&8.1 File History settings so it does not consume available backup space as quickly as it did before.

    File History is a great tool which is included in all Windows 8 builds. With this tool you can easily automate the backup of your data. However, one of the things that most of Windows 8 & 8.1 users face with this tool is when they run out of space which is used to make backup. This tutorial will show you how to clean up versions of your old backup files and improve the way your Windows 8 File History works, so it does not consume available backup space as quickly as it did before.

    To get started follow the steps here.

    Step 1: Open Control Panel---> All control Panel Items--->File History

    Step 2: When File History window opens up, from left menu click on Advanced settings.

    Step 3: Under Versions section click on Clean up versions link.

    Step 4: The File History Cleanup window will open up asking you to select the criteria based on which you want to delete older versions of files and folders. Click on drop down menu and then select All but the latest one.

    Step 5: Once you have selected the desired criteria click on Clean up button. This cleaning process will last for some time, so be patient.

    Step 6: Once its finished click OK.

    Step 7: Now in order to improve File History Settings, go back to File History window we opened in Step 1 and then under Keep saved versions drop down menu select a low time interval and see how it goes. Perform this change every few weeks or months and see which time interval works the best.

    Linkin got a reaction from Curtisbync in How to Fix ‘Virtual Memory Too Low’?
    "Out of virtual memory" is one of the Windows annoying errors. Usually your PC starts freezing first. Then an error appears and tells you that your virtual memory is too low. In this article we are going to explain what causes this error and how to fix it .

    Note: Typically, this low virtual memory problem happens in an old computer.

    What is virtual memory?
    Virtual memory, also known as page file or swap file, is a file on your hard disk that Windows uses in addition to physical memory (RAM) whenever the need arises. For example, when you are running an application or a process your RAM can’t handle, virtual memory is there to help. Usually the page file is 1.5 times the amount of physical memory.

    Why does the "low on virtual memory" error occur?
    There are two things that usually cause this error:
     1. You don’t have enough RAM;
     2. An application on your computer is buggy and is causing a memory leak.

    How to fix it?
    Getting rid of this error is not too difficult, especially if it happens because your computer doesn’t have enough RAM. If that’s the case, all you need to do is add more physical memory to speed up computer performance. If you can’t do it immediately, you can increase the size of the page file. Here’s how to do it:

    Right-click on My Computer and go to Properties.

    Click on the Advanced tab (or Advanced system settings link if you are using Windows 7 or Vista) and then click on the Settings button in the Performance section.

    A new window will open. Go to the Advanced tab.

    Find the Virtual memory section and click on the Change button.

    Select the System managed size option or manually change the size of the page file.

    Click OK.

    It might just be the case that your computer needs more real, physical memory. By this I mean RAM sticks that can be purchased in most computer, electronics, or office supply stores. If your PC is more than three years old, chances are it's close to being obsolete -- at least in terms of the ability to run today's resource-hogging software packages. And adding RAM to an older computer is the most effective thing you can do to upgrade it.

    However, if the error is caused by a buggy application, you’ll first need to identify the culprit. To do that, open the Task Manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard) and go to the Processes tab. Then click on View –> Select Columns. Check the Virtual Memory Size (in Windows 7 choose Commit Size) checkbox and click OK. Now the Task Manager will be showing how much virtual memory each application is using. If you click on the VM Size or Commit Size column name twice, the processes will be sorted based on how much virtual memory they are using, from largest to smallest. You will instantly see which process in the most hungry one.

    Then you’ll need to find the application that’s running the process.

    Now that you know which program is causing low virtual memory, you can try to fix it. First of all try updating the software – usually updates fix bugs like that. If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the application. If that doesn’t work either, contact the software support team and search the Internet for that particular software problem.

    If you share your Windows computer with friends or family members, and you want to know who and when others have used your computer. In this tutorial, I will show you how.

    Microsoft has integrated a feature called Windows Logs that allows you to record Windows logon events, which can give you details of previously logged on users, as well as time at which the computer was accessed. Follow this tutorial to find out how to use this feature in Windows 7, 8&8.1.

    You can check Windows Logs to see what went wrong on a server, or why a PC continues to crash at a specific point during bootup. Windows logs can tell you a lot of information about what the computer is trying to do, and why it’s failing. The cool thing is that it also holds a lot of informational data even when things don’t go wrong.

    To get started follow steps below.

    Step 1: First, we need to activate the “logon event” feature. To do that, press Win+R on your keyboard, inside window that opens up type gpedit.msc and press Enter on your keyboard.

    Step 2: When Local Group Policy Editor window opens up, inside left pane follow this path:

    Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy.

    Step 3: Now inside right pane double-click on the value Audit logon events.

    Step 4: When a new window opens up, make sure that the Local Security Settings tab is opened and then select check boxes in front of Success and Failure.

    Step 5: Click OK to save your changes. From this moment on Windows 8 will log all logon events with some basic details about them.

    Step 6: In order to access those events and see who accessed your computer and when, press Win+W on your keyboard and then inside search field type view events.

    Step 7: From left pane select View events logs to open it.

    Step 8: When the event log window opens up, inside left pane expand Windows Logs option and then select Security.

    Step 9: Now inside middle pane look for the events with Event ID of 4624. By double clicking on that event a new window will open with brief details about successful logon.

    System Restore uses restore points to return your system files and settings to an earlier point in time without affecting personal files. Restore points are created automatically every week, and just before significant system events, such as the installation of a program or device driver. You can also create a restore point manually.

    In this article, I am gonna show you how to create a system restore point manually in Windows 7&8.1. Just follow the steps below:

    Step 1: Open Control Panel

    Step 2: Click System and Security--->System

    Step 3: Now on the left side of the window you need to click on option System protection

    Step 4: In small window that show up click Create

    Step 5: Type a description for your System Restore Point and click Create button

    Step 6: Wait for couple minutes until System Restore Point is created and you are done. Close all existing windows.

    It is easier if you use the ‘Backup’ feature of Wise Care 365, it just takes 2 steps:

    1. Click ‘Backup’

    1. Click ‘Create a System Restore Point’

    You are done! Whenever you want to restore your computer to a previous point, you just need to click ‘Restore’. You will find all the restore points that are created automatically and manually are there. Choose any restore point and then click ‘Restore’, you system will go back to the previous state specified.

    Linkin got a reaction from TobacWab in Should You Defrag an SSD?

    Notice:
    1. Please read the description of each service first and then decide what services you can disable accordingly.
    2. Manual services start only if they are used by your system and you won’t encounter problems. It is the best status for a service if you are not very sure whether to disable it.

    To turn off services in windows you go to Start ---> Run ---> Type: ’services.msc’--- > Double Click on the service you want to alter and change the startup type to disabled or manual as directed in the list of unnecessary services below.

    Tablet PC Input Service (in Windows 7) / Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service (Windows 8): you can safely disable this service, unless you use Tablet PC. Some "Tablet PC Components" like the Snipping tool or Windows Journal will continue to function, while the Tablet PC Input Panel will not. The default startup type is Manual. You can set it even to Disabled without negatively impacting your computing experience;

    Windows Time: if your computer doesn’t have access to the Internet then you don’t need to update the system time from online servers. You can safely disable this service. But if you do, then this service will keep your system time accurate. Safe setting: Manual;

    Secondary logon: if you are the only user of your computer, it can be disabled. But only if you don’t plan to use more than one user account. Safe setting: Manual;

    Print Spooler: if you don’t have a printer attached to your computer and you don’t use virtual printers (e.g.: PDF creator, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, Snagit, etc) you can disable it. Safe setting: Manual;

    Offline Files: unless you use the offline file functionality from Windows, you can disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
    NOTE: This service is available only in Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise. In Windows 8 it is available only in the Pro and Enterprise editions.

    Routing and Remote Access Service: This service offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area networks. It allows computers to dial in to the local computer in order for it to get access to the local network. On a home computer you won’t need such features. Safe setting: Manual;

    Bluetooth Support Service: unless you use Bluetooth devices such as keyboards, mice, printers or phones, you can disable this service. Keep in mind that, if you choose to disable this service, then no Bluetooth devices will be recognized. Also, the already connected Bluetooth devices may fail to work properly. Safe setting: Manual;

    BitLocker Drive Encryption Service: unless you use Microsoft’s Encryption Software (included in Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise Edition, and in Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise), you can disable this service. BitLocker Drive Encryption is a feature that allows users to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes. Safe setting: Manual;

    Encrypting File System:EFS provides file encryption technology for storing encrypted files on NTFS file systems. If you don’t need to encrypt data on your hard drives, it is OK to disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
    Certificate Propagation: if you don’t use SmartCards (sometimes used in large organizations), it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;

    Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service: iSCSI is an abbreviation for Internet Small Computer System Interface - an IP-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. It allows client computers to access data over long distances on remote data centers, by using existing infrastructure (ex. over LAN, Internet). iSCSI devices are disks, tapes, CDs, and other storage devices on another networked computer that you can connect to. Sometimes these storage devices are part of a network called a storage area network (SAN). Unless you need to connect to iSCSI devices, it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;

    Netlogon: this service is not needed in a home computer. It maintains a secure channel between the local computer and the domain controller for authenticating users. Unless you are connecting to a network domain, this service will never be used. Safe setting: Manual;
    Parental Controls (in Windows 7) / Family Safety (in Windows 8): unless you have children using your computer and you want to monitor and control their activities, this service is not required. Safe setting: Manual;

    Remote Desktop Configuration: Remote Desktop Protocol is a protocol developed by Microsoft which provides Windows users with a graphical interface to another computer. The client used by Microsoft is called Remote Desktop Connection If you don’t need to connect remotely to another computer or allow incoming remote connections to yours, then it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;

    Remote Desktop Services: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;

    Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;
    Smart Card: Smart Cards are generally used for safety reasons in large organizations or corporations. The typical home user won’t probably need this service to be running. Safe setting: Manual;

    Smart Card Removal Policy: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;

    Windows Connect Now: this service is used by laptops and other mobile computers to connect to Wireless Networks. If you are on a desktop computer, you can disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;

    Windows Firewall: This service should be disabled only if you are using a third-party security solution that provides firewall protection. Safe setting: Manual;

    Windows Error Reporting Service: this service is used to report system errors to Microsoft. Although disabling this service won’t affect your Windows computer, letting it run when needed may help you solve problems and issues that occur on your system, by searching solutions available from Microsoft. Safe setting: Manual;

    Remote Registry: this service enables remote users to modify the Windows Registry. Some say that having this service turned on can pose security issues, and therefore, choose to disable it. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, this service is set to a manual start by default, while in Windows 8 it is disabled. After disabling it, I encountered some problems while updating my system, so I really think that it is safe to leave it set to Manual, at least in Windows 7. Safe setting: Manual;

    Windows Defender: if you use a third-party security solution (antivirus and antispyware), then disabling this service is a safe choice. Safe setting: Manual.

    How to Recover Deleted Files in Windows For Free? Check this video

    Most users’ computers have more than two partitions, we store different files and folders in different partitions. I am no exception, I have four partitions in my desktop, that is C: System, D: Backup, E: Work, F: Entertainment. There are some secret files and important documents that I don’t want to be seen by anyone, so it is imperative to hide this partition or the important files from the prying eyes. In this tutorial, I am gonna show you how to hide any free partition( the system partition not included), files and folders.

    1. Follow the next steps to hide a partition:

    Step 1: Right mouse click on Computer

    Step 2: Click on Manage

    Step 3: From the list of options click on Disk Management that will be located in the left bottom section

    Step 4: All your hard disks and its partitions will be shown in the right hand side

    Step 5: Right mouse click on the partition that you want to hide and select “Change Drive Letters and Paths”

    Step 6: Click on “Remove” and click “Yes”

    Step 7: Your drive will now be hidden in Computer

    To unhide the partition :

    Step 1: Go to Disk Management again and right mouse click on the hidden partition (there will not be a drive letter on the hidden drive) again select “Change Drive Letters and Path”

    Step 2: Click on Add and select an appropriate drive letter.

    Step 3: Click OK

    Step 4: Now the drive is visible.

    But this partition hiding technique also has disadvantages:
    1. What if I just want to hide some files but not the whole partition.
    2. Security issue, I mean some other guys with some computer skills can unhide this partition with several clicks, it is not very safe.

    So it is more convenient and secure if we can hide any file or folder we want and also encrypt them.

    Wise Folder Hider(http://www.wisecleaner.com/wisefolderhider.html) is a perfect solution for that. It is freeware, you don’t need any license key to use it.

    It is pretty straightforward to hide files and folders with it. The first time you opened it, you are prompted a window asking you to create your password. Next time you open it, just type in the password. If you want to hide any file, folder or a USB, just click the corresponding tab and choose the target file, folder or USB, or just drag and drop any files or folders into it. Simple like that.

    Not simple enough? I have an easier way. When you installed Wise Folder Hider, a shortcut of it is automatically added to your context menu. You can just right click any file or folder and then choose Hide Folder with Wise Folder, there you go, it is hidden by Wise Folder Hider.

    Still not satisfied? Some users may be concerned that I have to unhide the files when I need them, and hide them again when I am done using. What if I forget to hide them? Even I remember every time I use them, it is too many steps for me. The good thing about Wise Folder Hider is you can open any hidden files in Wise Folder Hider, you don’t have to unhide and hide a file over and over again. When you open any hidden files in it, it becomes visible to you. When you Close Wise Folder Hider, it becomes hidden again.

    Hope the things I said above can be of help to you guys.

    All the computer users use mouse as a pointing device. But if it stops working all of a sudden, it's quite difficult to operate PC with keyboard. You can use keyboard as mouse contingently before you get another mouse.
    In this article, I will show you how to do that:
    For Windows XP :

    1) Open "Control Panel".
    2) Click on "Switch to Classic View"
    3) Click on "Accessibility Options"
    4) Click on "Mouse Tab"
    5) Select "Use MouseKeys"
    6) Click "OK".
    7) Activate "Num Lock"
    8) Now you can control the mouse pointer using arrows on the numeric keypad.

    For Windows Vista/7/8/8.1 :

    1) Open Ease of Access Center from control panel

    2) Click Make the mouse easier to use.

    3) Under Control the mouse with the keyboard,check the mouse keys check box.

    Direct shortcut to activate mouse keys is Alt+Shift+NumLock. It works only for keyboards having number keyboards. Also you click Alt+Shift+NumLock  to deactivate this feature.

    Turning Off System Restore Improves Performance: FALSE
    System Restore is a real aid when it comes to rolling back bad Windows patches and driver updates, but by its very nature, it is said to impact performance because it’s always creating restore points, thus robbing you of a little power. The truth: System Restore lurks idle most of the time and rarely does anything at all, creating checkpoints only during app installs plus once every 24 hours by default. Even then it spends only a few seconds doing so and only during idle time. It’s virtually unthinkable that you’d try to run a program at the exact same time that System Restore began creating a restore point, and even if you did, you probably wouldn’t notice. The proof is in the benchmarks: We got nearly identical results on PCMark whether System Restore was on or off. (Note, however, that System Restore can consume a fair amount of disk space—this is configurable—so if gigabytes are precious to you, consider throttling it back.)

    Defragmenting SSD Drives Is Useful: FALSE
    Regardless of the actual value of defragmenting a physical hard disk (see the tip below), there’s really no value at all in defragging an SSD. The reason has to do with the way flash memory is constructed. The theory behind defragmenting a hard drive is to order data into contiguous, uninterrupted segments of the disk. But flash memory isn’t built that way: Blocks of data are placed throughout the drive space and are all accessible with the exact same speed, and since there are no moving parts in an SSD, there’s no advantage to rearranging them. Some even caution that, since flash memory is limited to a finite number of writes before it fails, defragmenting can actually do more harm than good.

    Defragmenting Your Hard Drive Improves Performance: TRUE
    One of the most venerable suggestions for improving disk performance is to defragment your hard drive regularly. The science of defragging is sound: By putting all the bits of a file or application in sequential order on your drive, the drive should have to do less work (and spend less time) to access those files. Thus: faster performance. Well, in practice it’s not really true. Today’s hard drives are fast enough to make fragmentation largely irrelevant, and our benchmark tests have repeatedly borne this out: On moderately fragmented drives, defragmentation will offer negligible to no performance increase. For seriously fragmented drives (think 40 percent or more), especially those running XP or older OSes, defragmentation can help, but don’t expect the world. As for third-party defrag tools, there’s no real evidence that they’re any more effective than Windows’ built-in defragger.
    Click Disk Defragmenter under Accessories / System Tools.

    Eliminate the Recent Documents/Recent Items Folder With a Registry Hack: TRUE
    For privacy reasons, many users on shared computers like to clear the Recent Documents folder or delete it altogether. Totally understandable, but there’s no need to turn to the registry to do the job. It’s all in the invaluable TweakUI (and in Vista, it’s built into the OS).
    In XP: Install TweakUI and browse to the Explorer section; then uncheck “Allow Recent Documents on Start menu.”
    In Vista, right-click the taskbar, click the Start Menu tab, and uncheck “Store and display a list of recently opened files.”

    Turning Off The Windows Splash Screen Will Shave Time Off Your Boot: TRUE
    No one seriously needs to be reminded they’re running Windows while the computer is loading the OS, right? Turning off the Windows splash screen ought to cut a little bit off of system boot time. For most systems, this generally works, but we never saw an average improvement of more than two seconds—and even less on Vista systems (probably because in lieu of the animated progress bar, you get a colorful Aurora). Still, a second is a second....
    XP: At the Run prompt, type msconfig. Click the BOOT.INI tab, and select the
    /NOGUIBOOT option.
    Very similar for Vista: Run msconfig, click the Boot tab, and select the No GUI Boot option.

    Turning Off Support For 8.3 Filenames Will Improve Performance: TRUE
    To maintain backward compatibility, Windows keeps an alias of every file and folder name in the old 8.3 format, even on NTFS partitions that support long filenames. The odds that you will ever need to use this format to access a file are incredibly small, so you can turn it off via a registry hack. The tip does nothing for general performance, but it can shorten the time it takes to open and display folders, though you’ll notice a difference only with extremely full folders (1,000 items or more) and usually only the first time they are opened.
    Run regedit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem. Select NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation and change the value to 1.

    A Registry Hack Lets You Keep Windows From Rebooting Automatically After Installing Updates: TRUE
    Another huge nuisance in Windows. There’s just nothing quite like leaving a file open overnight, then returning to your PC in the morning to find that Microsoft has helpfully restarted your machine for you, shoving all your work into digital limbo and leaving an evil calling card: “This update required an automatic restart.” It’s possible to stop auto-reboots, but it’ll take a registry hack.
    Run regedit and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Polices\Microsoft\Windows. Create a new key under Windows and call it WindowsUpdate. Now create another new key under WindowsUpdate called AU. With AU selected, in the right-hand pane right-click and create a New DWORD. Call it NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers. Double-click the DWORD and give it a value of 1. Reboot, and Windows’s death grip over your system will be ended.

    A Registry Hack Lets You Alphabetize The All Programs List Automatically: TRUE
    One of Windows’s little eccentricities is that when you install a new application it places it in the All Programs list at the bottom, not in alphabetic order where it belongs. You can manually reorder the list by right-clicking on one of its entries and clicking Sort by Name, but you’ll need a complicated registry hack to automate things every time you install an app.
    Run regedit and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer. Right-click the MenuOrder key (in the left-hand pane) and select Permissions. Click Advanced. Deselect “Include inheritable permissions...” (Vista) or “Include from parent the permission...” (XP). Click Copy at the Security pop-up. Click OK. Now, back in the Permissions view, select your user name and deselect “Allow” next to Full Control in the Permissions pane at the bottom of the window. Repeat this step for any groups you are part of (Administrators, etc.). Reboot. Now when you install apps, they’ll be alphabetized automatically. Whew!

    Vista Tips
    Turning On Multiple Cores In Vista Improves Boot Time: FALSE
    You’ll find an option within Vista’s msconfig utility that cryptically lets you set the “Number of processors” used during boot. By default it is turned off (with the drop-down set to 1). We tried upping the setting to 2 on a dual-core system and, guess what, no change in boot time whatsoever. Turns out this is just a debug setting for coders who want to test how programs load on single-core machines without having to physically go to a less-sophisticated PC. It can be completely ignored. By default Windows uses all your cores.

    Superfetch Boosts Performance: TRUE
    Superfetch is an update of the XP Prefetcher, designed to more intelligently load applications into RAM based on frequency of use. With Superfetch on, your PC should theoretically get faster over time, particularly when loading frequently used apps. You won’t see improvement in general performance, like rendering Photoshop files, but Superfetch does tend to make apps load 10 to 20 percent more quickly, depending on their size.
    Superfetch is on by default. To ensure that it’s active, go to the Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, and select Services. Scroll down to Superfetch and ensure that it is set to “Started” and “Automatic.”

    Write Caching Will Improve Performance On SATA Drives: TRUE
    This feature is disabled by default in Vista because if your computer loses power before a write is completed, you can lose data. If you’re confident in your UPS’s capabilities, crank it up and you’ll see at least a 10 percent improvement in performance. Remember, write caching is supported only on SATA drives. The options are grayed out for older ATA disks.
    In Explorer, right-click the drive you want to speed up and select Properties. Click the Hardware tab, select Properties again. Click the Policies tab. Check both of the boxes beneath “Optimize for performance.”

    ReadyBoost Will Improve System Performance: TRUE
    Yes and no. If you have a reasonably modern system, with even 1GB of RAM or more, you won’t see any performance increase from ReadyBoost, which lets you use removable flash memory to cache disk operations. In fact, with lots of RAM, we saw a slight dip in performance when using ReadyBoost. The picture is different if you’re pathetically RAM-poor: With just 512MB of RAM, app load times and general performance can be modestly improved with ReadyBoost... but why not spring for some real DIMMs instead of this half-baked setup? You shouldn’t be running Vista at all with so little RAM, nor should you be reading this magazine. 2GB of name-brand RAM will cost you less than 50 bucks; pricier than a 2GB thumb drive but oh so worth it.
    If you really want to run ReadyBoost, the easiest way to turn it on is to insert your thumb drive and allow AutoPlay to run. Select “Speed up my system” from the menu. If you have AutoPlay disabled, right- click the thumb drive in the Computer view, select Properties, and choose the ReadyBoost tab. Dial ReadyBoost up to the maximum supported level of 4GB.

  25. Like
    Linkin got a reaction from Curtisbync in How to Disable Windows 7 Search?
    Windows Search  in Windows 7 is turned on by default. If you are using other third party tools instead or you want to disable it because of security reasons, you can follow this tutorial.

    Before you actually read it, I have to warn you, if you disable Windows 7 search, you will see:

    1. All the search boxes in Windows will disappear, including the search boxes in Windows Explorer, the Start menu, Control Panel, the Documents library, and other libraries.
    2. Programs that rely on Windows Search might not function properly.
    3. Internet Explorer won't have enhanced search capabilities.
    4. Windows Media Center won't have enhanced search capability.
    5. You'll no longer be able to arrange your library views by metadata, and your column headers will only sort items, not stack or group them.
    6. Options that affect Windows Search functionality will be removed, including indexing in Control Panel and the Search tab in Folder Options.
    7. Windows will no longer recognize these search-based file types: search-ms, searchconnector-ms, and osdx.
    8. Pressing Windows Key+F to open a search window will give you this error.

    Follow the next easy steps to disable it:
    Step 1: Open Control Panel
    Step 2: Click Programs

    Step 3: Click on Turn Windows features on or off

    Step 4: From Windows Features window scroll down all the way to the bottom of the window and uncheck Windows Search

    Step 5: Click Yes to the message asking are you sure you want to continue and click OK to save changes

    Step 6: Wait for few seconds while Windows finish changes and then Restart your computer for changes take effect.

    Step 7: Next time when you login in Windows 7 you won’t see Search box in your Start menu.
