Nowadays, more and more computers are using SSD, some computer users upgrade their HDD to SSD, which brings the question should we defrag an SSD?

Traditional spinning hard drives have a metric known as Access Time (or Seek Time, which is a slightly different measurement) that refers to the average amount of time it takes for the drive armature to physically reposition the heads so that they can begin reading data from a given sector of the disk (it may be more or less depending on how far the heads have to travel). It should be noted that this latency is measured in milliseconds (thosandths of a second) and is incurred every single time the heads have to be repositioned.
 
The whole purpose of defragmentation is to arrange the files in such a way as to make them more or less sequential, so that the heads do not have to be repositioned as much in order to read a file.
 
SSD's do not have heads that need to be moved, nor do they have spinning latency. As a result, the access time for every cell in the matrix is equal, and is measured in nanoseconds (billionths of a second). Even if a file is very heavily fragmented, the increased latency to read it is imperceptibly small. Defragging will not improve performance to a noticeable degree.
 
Also unlike traditional spinning hard drives, the individual cells in an SSD have a limited number of write cycles before they "wear out". SSDs employ a wear-leveling algorithm to spread out writes to extend the life of the drive. Relocating the same data to a different area of the flash cells waste those write cycles. In this case, defragging can actually reduce the lifespan of the drive.
 
So now our concern is what shall we do to increase the lifespan of SSD. 
 
Below are the 5 most basic and effective ways to improve SSD’s lifespan.
1. Disable prefetch parameters to increase SSD working life.
2. Disable Superfetch parameters to increase working life of SSD.
3. Disable defrag system drive on boot to increase working life of SSD. 
4. Disable auto defrag when idle to increase working life of SSD.
5. Enable TRIM function to improve working performance of SSD.

It is true that disabling unneeded and unused Windows Services would speed up your computer. So we are wondering what Windows services might not be absolutely necessary, and which of them you can disable without ruining your computing experience. 
 
Notice: 
1. Please read the description of each service first and then decide what services you can disable accordingly. 
2. Manual services start only if they are used by your system and you won’t encounter problems. It is the best status for a service if you are not very sure whether to disable it.

To turn off services in windows you go to Start ---> Run ---> Type: ’services.msc’--- > Double Click on the service you want to alter and change the startup type to disabled or manual as directed in the list of unnecessary services below.


Tablet PC Input Service (in Windows 7) / Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service (Windows 8): you can safely disable this service, unless you use Tablet PC. Some "Tablet PC Components" like the Snipping tool or Windows Journal will continue to function, while the Tablet PC Input Panel will not. The default startup type is Manual. You can set it even to Disabled without negatively impacting your computing experience;
 
Windows Time: if your computer doesn’t have access to the Internet then you don’t need to update the system time from online servers. You can safely disable this service. But if you do, then this service will keep your system time accurate. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Secondary logon: if you are the only user of your computer, it can be disabled. But only if you don’t plan to use more than one user account. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Fax: unless you use your computer to send or receive faxes using fax resources available on your system (for ex. by using a fax-modem), you can disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Print Spooler: if you don’t have a printer attached to your computer and you don’t use virtual printers (e.g.: PDF creator, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, Snagit, etc) you can disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Offline Files: unless you use the offline file functionality from Windows, you can disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
NOTE: This service is available only in Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise. In Windows 8 it is available only in the Pro and Enterprise editions.
 
Routing and Remote Access Service: This service offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area networks. It allows computers to dial in to the local computer in order for it to get access to the local network. On a home computer you won’t need such features. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Bluetooth Support Service: unless you use Bluetooth devices such as keyboards, mice, printers or phones, you can disable this service. Keep in mind that, if you choose to disable this service, then no Bluetooth devices will be recognized. Also, the already connected Bluetooth devices may fail to work properly. Safe setting: Manual;
 
BitLocker Drive Encryption Service: unless you use Microsoft’s Encryption Software (included in Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise Edition, and in Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise), you can disable this service. BitLocker Drive Encryption is a feature that allows users to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Encrypting File System:EFS provides file encryption technology for storing encrypted files on NTFS file systems. If you don’t need to encrypt data on your hard drives, it is OK to disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
Certificate Propagation: if you don’t use SmartCards (sometimes used in large organizations), it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service: iSCSI is an abbreviation for Internet Small Computer System Interface - an IP-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. It allows client computers to access data over long distances on remote data centers, by using existing infrastructure (ex. over LAN, Internet). iSCSI devices are disks, tapes, CDs, and other storage devices on another networked computer that you can connect to. Sometimes these storage devices are part of a network called a storage area network (SAN). Unless you need to connect to iSCSI devices, it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Netlogon: this service is not needed in a home computer. It maintains a secure channel between the local computer and the domain controller for authenticating users. Unless you are connecting to a network domain, this service will never be used. Safe setting: Manual;
Parental Controls (in Windows 7) / Family Safety (in Windows 8): unless you have children using your computer and you want to monitor and control their activities, this service is not required. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Desktop Configuration: Remote Desktop Protocol is a protocol developed by Microsoft which provides Windows users with a graphical interface to another computer. The client used by Microsoft is called Remote Desktop Connection If you don’t need to connect remotely to another computer or allow incoming remote connections to yours, then it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Desktop Services: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;
Smart Card: Smart Cards are generally used for safety reasons in large organizations or corporations. The typical home user won’t probably need this service to be running. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Smart Card Removal Policy: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Connect Now: this service is used by laptops and other mobile computers to connect to Wireless Networks. If you are on a desktop computer, you can disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Firewall: This service should be disabled only if you are using a third-party security solution that provides firewall protection. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Error Reporting Service: this service is used to report system errors to Microsoft. Although disabling this service won’t affect your Windows computer, letting it run when needed may help you solve problems and issues that occur on your system, by searching solutions available from Microsoft. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Registry: this service enables remote users to modify the Windows Registry. Some say that having this service turned on can pose security issues, and therefore, choose to disable it. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, this service is set to a manual start by default, while in Windows 8 it is disabled. After disabling it, I encountered some problems while updating my system, so I really think that it is safe to leave it set to Manual, at least in Windows 7. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Defender: if you use a third-party security solution (antivirus and antispyware), then disabling this service is a safe choice. Safe setting: Manual.

Step 1: Open Start menu, right mouse click on Computer and from context menu choose Properties
 
Step 2: Control Panel window will open, form left side of the window click on System protection

 
Step 3: When small window open choose System Protection tab and then from Protection settings select your local drive and click on Configure button

 
Step 4: Under new window locate the section Disk space usage and scroll the slider down to lower percentage. Click OK to save your changes. If you restore point space is too low don’t worry because windows will delete older restore points and make more room for newest one

 
Step 5: Now of you really need/want to reduce the space used by Restore Point you can also turn it off completely (I would not recommend it). To do that repeat Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3
 
Step 6: Then select Turn off system protection and click OK to save changes.
Warning: If you decrease the disk space to be smaller than the space that is currently being used by system protection, older restore points, including previous versions of files, will be deleted.

Everyone wants the latest and the fastest, so at the end of it you get stuck with something old, used and slow by today's standards. No, we weren't talking about your wife/husband, we were talking about your computer.

So, what do you do with an old computer that you think is slow? Dump it into a garbage can or stow it off on eBay? Nah, here are some creative uses for an old computer.
 
1. Store your Photos & Music on it
Use it like a Photo and Music server. As long as you have plenty of hard disk space you won't hit a problem. Dump all your music CDs on it if you want. Connect it a flat screen and play a slide show of your photos.
 
2.  Convert it into a Browsing Station
Plug in your Internet connection, or a network cable via your broadband and you can make that old slow computer into a Internet browsing station for yourself and your friends when they come home. As an added benefit you can restrict the Internet access of the old computer as much as you want with some Firewall/Internet Security software and give it your kids to browse from.
 
3. Make it a file/storage server
Put in Linux and convert the old PC into a full functional file/storage server that you can dump in the attic or garage. If you are short of disk space just get a bigger hard-disk.
 
4. Use it like a computer lab
Need to try out Linux or some obscure software, why not use your old computer for it? You can use it learn hard disk recovery skills or open it up and do some good old hardware surgery. 
 
5. Put it your car, RV or boat
Now, that's a good idea. All you need is a power inverter, a device that converts 12V to 120V power. So, you can listen to music from the hard-disk or play VCD/DVDs while you are riding in a car, RV or a boat. Of course, if you are going to watch stuff instead of listening you will need a small LCD display as well.
 
6. Convert your old PC into a router or firewall
Load up Linux with Shorewall/IPtables or just install IPCOP to convert that old piece of hardware into a very powerful router or firewall. This by far is one of the best recommendations I always give to friends who run small offices. No old computer is slow enough for Linux or to work like a router/firewall.
 
7. Broadcast Music/Videos or monitor your house with it
Why not setup a Shoutcast server and stream all your MP3 files to the world? or stream videos or a webcam feed, which you can watch from anywhere.
You can also connect a inexpensive webcam and place it near any place you want to monitor, throw in a internet connection at the back and you have your own personal security monitoring station. Keep a watch from anywhere.
 
8. Watch TV or make it into a Tivo/VCR
Drop in a TV tuner card and you can watch TV with your computer and do neat stuff like Time Shifting. Or if install MythTV or FreeVo to make it into a fully functional Tivo/VCR and record TV programs.
 
9. Make it into a Gaming Machine
Okay, it may not run all the very latest stuff but it will still be powerful enough to play some of the best games. You can load all your favorite games you have played on it or load some arcade games like Pacman and make it into a gaming station for yourself or for guests. Get a  pair of joysticks or gamepads as well to complete the experience.
 
10. Upgrade it
Instead of trashing it, why not upgrade it? Of course, that idea may not apply to some of the very classic stuff like the 386 machines, but you can upgrade most of them in some or the other way to make them more powerful - some new memory, hard disk or even a new video card could make quite a lot of difference.
 
11. Use it for Salvage
Sometimes you can use stuff from your old computer to replace things in your new computer or some other computer of an emergency aid, stuff like additional memories or a power supply.
 
12. Use it to vent your anger
This is a dangerous thing but what the heck if you want to vent your anger for all those crashed Windows sessions, you old PC could be the perfect guinea pig. 
 
13. Automate your home with it or make it your answering machine
Connect it with X10 to automate your home and your old PC is capable enough to switch on heaters and lights or keep a watch on intruders.
Or just load up and answering machine software and let it handle voice mail for you. Why do you need to pay for a voice mail service when your PC can do it for free?
 
14. Exchange it
If you don't want to do anything with your old computer, you can still get a good deal by exchanging it instead of trashing it or selling it on eBay. Companies like HP and IBM have such computer exchange programs, often referred to as trade-in programs.
 
15. Donate it
Lastly, you can always get some goodwill by donating it away to someone in need. It can be anyone you know - your relatives, kids or  someone else like a school.

Windows Search  in Windows 7 is turned on by default. If you are using other third party tools instead or you want to disable it because of security reasons, you can follow this tutorial.
 
Before you actually read it, I have to warn you, if you disable Windows 7 search, you will see:
 
1. All the search boxes in Windows will disappear, including the search boxes in Windows Explorer, the Start menu, Control Panel, the Documents library, and other libraries.
2. Programs that rely on Windows Search might not function properly.
3. Internet Explorer won't have enhanced search capabilities.
4. Windows Media Center won't have enhanced search capability.
5. You'll no longer be able to arrange your library views by metadata, and your column headers will only sort items, not stack or group them.
6. Options that affect Windows Search functionality will be removed, including indexing in Control Panel and the Search tab in Folder Options.
7. Windows will no longer recognize these search-based file types: search-ms, searchconnector-ms, and osdx.
8. Pressing Windows Key+F to open a search window will give you this error.

 
Follow the next easy steps to disable it:
Step 1: Open Control Panel
Step 2: Click Programs

Step 3: Click on Turn Windows features on or off

Step 4: From Windows Features window scroll down all the way to the bottom of the window and uncheck Windows Search

Step 5: Click Yes to the message asking are you sure you want to continue and click OK to save changes


Step 6: Wait for few seconds while Windows finish changes and then Restart your computer for changes take effect.

Step 7: Next time when you login in Windows 7 you won’t see Search box in your Start menu.

1. Add more RAM
If you have read similar articles, some may suggest you increase the virtual memory. I would not recommend doing so. Because loading data from the hard disk is slower than loading from RAM. So I strongly recommend adding more RAM instead of increasing the virtual memory. With more memory, you can load game data more easily, without the need to access your disk drive. If you’re an active gamer, you should consider upgrading your PC or notebook to 8 GB or more. You can refer to my other article on how to choose the right RAM to upgrade for better performance( http://forum.wisecleaner.com/index.php?/topic/7443-how-to-choose-the-right-ram-to-upgrade-ram-of-windows-pc/ ).
 
But if you don’t have enough RAM and really need more virtual memory, you can increase Virtual Memory to assimilate a larger size of data making more room for the memory to facilitate the running game.
 
Here is how:
1. Go to Control Panel, view it in icons, and click ’System’.
2. In the right side of System window, click Advanced system settings
3. Go to the Advanced tab and click Settings under Performance section
4. In the Performance Options window, go to the Advanced tab click Change button
5. Click to choose the Custom size for virtual memory
6. Put Initial size and Maximum size in MBs, and click OK button to save changes
7. Click OK on Performance Options window and then System Properties window
It is directed to restart your computer in order to take effect of the changes you have made. 
 
2. Optimize the startup items.
When you start Windows, there are many applications and services that run automatically. Overall performance can be noticeably improved by stopping all of the unnecessary programs that bog down your PC and by running Windows without any third-party services. To optimize the startup items, download Wise Care 365, and click ‘System Tuneup’ in System Tuneup section. There you can disable all the apps and services according to your own needs.  
 
3. Update to the latest graphics driver

Like any piece of software, games are never completely finished upon release. After the games hit the shelves, the development teams are still fixing bugs and working to increase games performance. As such, users should get the latest patches available for them. Depending on your resolution settings and your specific machine, you will gain a couple of frames per second. This can mean the difference between a choppy and smooth gaming experience.
 
5. Defragment your Disk
Hard Disk Drives continuously absorb new data. Frequent addition of new information and deletion of the old one causes the data to form clutters. It is then hard for system to track down the scattered game files, resulting in lags and pauses. To rearrange these fragmented files and data, open Wise Care 365, check all the partitions in your computer and defragment all of them. 
 
Please not that if you are having SSD drive in your machine, it does not need to be defragmented, as it does not engage any fragments of information.
 
6. Clean Windows Registry

7. Uninstall those old programs you don’t need

It is true that disabling unneeded and unused Windows Services would speed up your computer. So we are wondering what Windows services might not be absolutely necessary, and which of them you can disable without ruining your computing experience.

1. Please read the description of each service first and then decide what services you can disable accordingly.

Print Spooler: if you don’t have a printer attached to your computer and you don’t use virtual printers (e.g.: PDF creator, Microsoft XPS Document Writer, Snagit, etc) you can disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Offline Files: unless you use the offline file functionality from Windows, you can disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
NOTE: This service is available only in Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise. In Windows 8 it is available only in the Pro and Enterprise editions.
 
Routing and Remote Access Service: This service offers routing services to businesses in local area and wide area networks. It allows computers to dial in to the local computer in order for it to get access to the local network. On a home computer you won’t need such features. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Bluetooth Support Service: unless you use Bluetooth devices such as keyboards, mice, printers or phones, you can disable this service. Keep in mind that, if you choose to disable this service, then no Bluetooth devices will be recognized. Also, the already connected Bluetooth devices may fail to work properly. Safe setting: Manual;
 
BitLocker Drive Encryption Service: unless you use Microsoft’s Encryption Software (included in Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise Edition, and in Windows 8 Pro and Enterprise), you can disable this service. BitLocker Drive Encryption is a feature that allows users to protect data by providing encryption for entire volumes. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Encrypting File System:EFS provides file encryption technology for storing encrypted files on NTFS file systems. If you don’t need to encrypt data on your hard drives, it is OK to disable it. Safe setting: Manual;
Certificate Propagation: if you don’t use SmartCards (sometimes used in large organizations), it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service: iSCSI is an abbreviation for Internet Small Computer System Interface - an IP-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. It allows client computers to access data over long distances on remote data centers, by using existing infrastructure (ex. over LAN, Internet). iSCSI devices are disks, tapes, CDs, and other storage devices on another networked computer that you can connect to. Sometimes these storage devices are part of a network called a storage area network (SAN). Unless you need to connect to iSCSI devices, it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Netlogon: this service is not needed in a home computer. It maintains a secure channel between the local computer and the domain controller for authenticating users. Unless you are connecting to a network domain, this service will never be used. Safe setting: Manual;
Parental Controls (in Windows 7) / Family Safety (in Windows 8): unless you have children using your computer and you want to monitor and control their activities, this service is not required. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Desktop Configuration: Remote Desktop Protocol is a protocol developed by Microsoft which provides Windows users with a graphical interface to another computer. The client used by Microsoft is called Remote Desktop Connection If you don’t need to connect remotely to another computer or allow incoming remote connections to yours, then it is safe to disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Desktop Services: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Desktop Services UserMode Port Redirector: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;
Smart Card: Smart Cards are generally used for safety reasons in large organizations or corporations. The typical home user won’t probably need this service to be running. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Smart Card Removal Policy: same as above. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Connect Now: this service is used by laptops and other mobile computers to connect to Wireless Networks. If you are on a desktop computer, you can disable this service. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Firewall: This service should be disabled only if you are using a third-party security solution that provides firewall protection. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Error Reporting Service: this service is used to report system errors to Microsoft. Although disabling this service won’t affect your Windows computer, letting it run when needed may help you solve problems and issues that occur on your system, by searching solutions available from Microsoft. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Remote Registry: this service enables remote users to modify the Windows Registry. Some say that having this service turned on can pose security issues, and therefore, choose to disable it. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, this service is set to a manual start by default, while in Windows 8 it is disabled. After disabling it, I encountered some problems while updating my system, so I really think that it is safe to leave it set to Manual, at least in Windows 7. Safe setting: Manual;
 
Windows Defender: if you use a third-party security solution (antivirus and antispyware), then disabling this service is a safe choice. Safe setting: Manual.

Step 1: Open Start menu, right mouse click on Computer and from context menu choose Properties
 
Step 2: Control Panel window will open, form left side of the window click on System protection

 
Step 3: When small window open choose System Protection tab and then from Protection settings select your local drive and click on Configure button

 
Step 4: Under new window locate the section Disk space usage and scroll the slider down to lower percentage. Click OK to save your changes. If you restore point space is too low don’t worry because windows will delete older restore points and make more room for newest one

 
Step 5: Now of you really need/want to reduce the space used by Restore Point you can also turn it off completely (I would not recommend it). To do that repeat Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3
 
Step 6: Then select Turn off system protection and click OK to save changes.
Warning: If you decrease the disk space to be smaller than the space that is currently being used by system protection, older restore points, including previous versions of files, will be deleted.

In this article, I will show you how to remove it completely from your IE You may see more than a lot of articles on how to remove Ask toolbar on the internet, but in this one, I am gonna tell you the easiest fix.
First you should download Wise Program Uninstaller(http://wisecleaner.com/wiseuninstallerfree.html), a function formidable program uninstaller. Someone may wanna ask, we can uninstall a software in Control Panel, why bother downloading a third party uninstaller. One thing you might not know is the uninstaller built in a software can’t remove a software completely, it might leave behind some residual files, folders or registry. Accumulation of this kind of junk files or registry could lead to a slow computer or even computer crash.

Nowadays, more and more computers are using SSD, some computer users upgrade their HDD to SSD, which brings the question should we defrag an SSD?

Traditional spinning hard drives have a metric known as Access Time (or Seek Time, which is a slightly different measurement) that refers to the average amount of time it takes for the drive armature to physically reposition the heads so that they can begin reading data from a given sector of the disk (it may be more or less depending on how far the heads have to travel). It should be noted that this latency is measured in milliseconds (thosandths of a second) and is incurred every single time the heads have to be repositioned.
 
The whole purpose of defragmentation is to arrange the files in such a way as to make them more or less sequential, so that the heads do not have to be repositioned as much in order to read a file.
 
SSD's do not have heads that need to be moved, nor do they have spinning latency. As a result, the access time for every cell in the matrix is equal, and is measured in nanoseconds (billionths of a second). Even if a file is very heavily fragmented, the increased latency to read it is imperceptibly small. Defragging will not improve performance to a noticeable degree.
 
Also unlike traditional spinning hard drives, the individual cells in an SSD have a limited number of write cycles before they "wear out". SSDs employ a wear-leveling algorithm to spread out writes to extend the life of the drive. Relocating the same data to a different area of the flash cells waste those write cycles. In this case, defragging can actually reduce the lifespan of the drive.
 
So now our concern is what shall we do to increase the lifespan of SSD. 
 
Below are the 5 most basic and effective ways to improve SSD’s lifespan.
1. Disable prefetch parameters to increase SSD working life.
2. Disable Superfetch parameters to increase working life of SSD.
3. Disable defrag system drive on boot to increase working life of SSD. 
4. Disable auto defrag when idle to increase working life of SSD.
5. Enable TRIM function to improve working performance of SSD.

Virtual memory, also known as page file or swap file, is a file on your hard disk that Windows uses in addition to physical memory (RAM) whenever the need arises. For example, when you are running an application or a process your RAM can’t handle, virtual memory is there to help. Usually the page file is 1.5 times the amount of physical memory.
 
Why does the "low on virtual memory" error occur?
There are two things that usually cause this error:
 1. You don’t have enough RAM;

However, if the error is caused by a buggy application, you’ll first need to identify the culprit. To do that, open the Task Manager (press Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard) and go to the Processes tab. Then click on View –> Select Columns. Check the Virtual Memory Size (in Windows 7 choose Commit Size) checkbox and click OK. Now the Task Manager will be showing how much virtual memory each application is using. If you click on the VM Size or Commit Size column name twice, the processes will be sorted based on how much virtual memory they are using, from largest to smallest. You will instantly see which process in the most hungry one.
 
Then you’ll need to find the application that’s running the process.
 
Now that you know which program is causing low virtual memory, you can try to fix it. First of all try updating the software – usually updates fix bugs like that. If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the application. If that doesn’t work either, contact the software support team and search the Internet for that particular software problem.
