Please try the instruction below.

Step 1: Start the Windows Installer service.

a.    Click Start, type Services.msc and press [ENTER]

b.    Double-click Windows Installer.

c.    Set the Startup type of Windows Installer to Manual.

d.    Click Start to start the service. Note down the error message if any.

e.    Click OK.

Step 2: Install the latest version of Windows Installer which you can download it from the link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5a58b56f-60b6-4412-95b9-54d056d6f9f4&displaylang=en

Thanks.

Thank you very much.

The Microsoft help pages suggested an older version of Windows installer.

When trying to install that, I got the message that my current version was newer, and therefore the installation did not take place.

Your link directed me to the correct version. After installing that I can again install updates, and every other program I want to install.

What a relief! Thanks again,

David
