Just ran the cleaner 8 on an Acer with windows 8.1 machine. The cleaner found close to 600 MB of stuff to delete. Did that. While windows was up to date before, on reboot, Windows was showing a huge amount of updates to be done. I had to redownload and install them again. I notice also that my Firefox profile was gone as well. Had to recreat it again too. I use the program before but it never did that. ANy change in the new version ?

I also updated to WDC 8.38 today (via Major Geeks website, download@authors site) and bam!  Brand new firefox install and all favorites/bookmarks, etc are gone!  This was on a WIN7 machine and I have used WDC forever with no ill effects?  Help?

(P.S.armageddon51: how did you restore FF?)

Hi guys.
The wisecleaner website seems to have a lot of problems today (i checked it the same time I replied in this topic).
I get a lot of 404 errors on my browser (MSIE11) and I see strange behaviors in a lot of wisecleaner's sub-webpages... I don't know if it is under attack (but it seems it is).
I'm using the wise disk cleaner 8.36.591 version (portable), that should be the last version updated the 28th of this month, and when I click check for updates it doesn't find a new version.
Hence, I recommend you to NOT use that "new" version at least until the WiseTeam can update us on the state of their website and the state of their software WDC and I recommend you also to do some scans with the tools listed in Free tools (Anti-malware, anti-spyware, anti-virus) that you could use to inspect your computer.

Ok did some tests in windows 8.1 virtualbox. Yes indeed, the cleaner does wipe out the mozilla profile and all what's involved. Windows still boot after the cleanup. As for the windows update files, not sure but I am afraid of what else it has  deleted.Wise now change to a new version 8.39. Hopefully that will fix all this.

I can't imagine all the damage it has done to users who use 8.38. That could strike a dead blow to the cleaner if it so unreliable and destructive. How can the company did not get that before the release. You are playing with important files here so it has to be 100% bullet proof.

EDIT 8.39 seems to be all right but my confidence has been shaken.

Any way to recover the profile?

If you have a backup somewhere, you can just replace the content of the folder "users/yourusername/appdata/roaming/mozilla/firefox/profiles/profilenamexxx" with the content of the backup.Make sure to close firefox before doing that.

Another way is to restore windows to an earlier date using the automaking restore point feature. I am not sure though if the backup point include the appdata folder.

I managed to restore my prfile/preferences/bookmarks to Firefox after the WDC 8.38 upgrade.  Virus/malware scans showed no issues.  This morning, after doing a clean with WDC 8.38, all Firefox settings were wiped out and a new user profile for FF was established.

Thank goodness I did a FEBE extension backup of Ff after I had managed to restore to the correct FF user profile last night.  WDC has now been deleted from my system.

On a different WIN7 machine I updated from within WDC 8.36 to the new WDC 8.39 release........................  I now have ZERO internet access (cannot find DNS server)!!!!! Grrrrr :( :o

I am attempting to restore my system and regain network access.

Wise: you've got a problem.  Once is an accident, twice is NOT a coincidence.  I don't know if you been hacked or what or if it's just sloppy code, but I am very disappointed.

Hi All,

Actually, I don't think the problem points to Wise.  I'm guessing their Disk Cleaner follows the same rules/policies as Windows Disk cleanup, correct?  This just happened to me in the past couple of days.  I had used Windows  Disk Cleaner and used the Advanced Task to clean up old packages (or something along that line).  When I restarted later on, I was seeing a lot of the similar messages you see after restarting on Patch Tuesdays (Windows is configuring....), but seemed like the level of a major update  or even a Service Pack. When I looked at my Even Viewer, I nearly fainted.  I found a thread on Microsoft's site dealing with the exact same issue.  But before anyone panics, this is the message at the bottom of the thread:

This doesn't uninstall the updates themselves but rather the installation files for the updates... meaning if one disappeared it could just get it from your harddisk instead of redownloading it.  Hence the name "Package".  It's a little alarming but it's basically windows' version of cleaning up old installation files.  Various AVG products have this option to retrieve disk space but the updates themselves are still installed.

Microsoft uninstalling updates by itself

Yesterday, October 25, 2013, I'm seeing Microsoft uninstalling a ton of updates from my computer as evident in the event viewer.

(There are at least three times as many as I posted.  I cut it short.)

Edit:

I found out that this is connected with the Windows Update disk cleanup hotfix released by Microsoft: http://blogs.technet.com/b/askpfeplat/archive/2013/10/08/breaking-news-reduce-the-size-of-the-winsxs-directory-and-free-up-disk-space-with-a-new-update-for-windows-7-sp1-clients.aspx

-----------------------------

Poor guy ended his poist with "I just did a factory restore of the PC."

There are a few back and forth messages till that one I posted in the beginning.    Anyway, I did check the "Programs and Features" in Control Panel and did a few random searches, and found that the updates were still installed.

Anyway, I'll leave it to the Wise staff members to confirm their process as to whether it mimics Windows.
