  1. Hello altogether,

I´ve got a problem with VirtualRouterPlus. Perhaps there´s someone who can help.

I connect to the internet exclusively via a web-stick (Aldi Web-Stick Model S 4012, Manufacturer: HUAWEI E1550 HSDPA USB Stick). I run WIN 8.1, 64bit on my PC.

What I want to do is give an internet-connection to my laptop as well without having to reconnect the web-stick each time I switch between PC and laptop.
    I want to use my laptop (Linux/Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, 64bit and WIN7, 64bit, Dual-Boot).

Therefore I thought of solving this problem with the help of a virtual router.
So I decided to employ VirtualRouterPlus and VirtualRouter Manager.

I actually succeed in establishing a connection. The laptop recognizes the existence of the virtual WLAN. It also connects to it.
And VirtualRouter Manager on my host-PC says:"Peers connected: (Laptop)". So the connection really is established.
I can access files and folders from my host PC. That really works.

But for some reason no internet-connection can be established.
It seems as if some sort of interconnection of my Huawei web-stick-adapter with the virtual router-adapter is missing.

Can someone help me? Any suggestions are welcome

    Greetings

  2. Hello altogether,

    I´ve got a question regarding running Windows 10 with a web-stick as internet-connection.

At present I´m using WIN 8.1 update, 64bit and I am very satisfied with it.
The thing is that the time until July 29 poses a question to me. Till then the upgrade to WIN 10 is free of charge.
So I have to think about whether to change over or keep my old system.

As far as internet connection is concerned there might be a problem though.

My internet connection is established via a web-stick exclusively (Aldi Web-Stick Model S 4012, manufacturer: HUAWEI E1550 HSDPA USB Stick).
With this I´ve got a data-volume of 5 GB per month ("high-speed"; after that download speed will be reduced dramatically).
So I have to manage with these conditions and up and until now I get along with it just fine.
But with WIN 10 I´m probably bound to run into problems.

The so-called forced updates are something that don´t appeal to me at all.
There are always some of them under way and I see no possibility of avoiding the respective actions.
Furthermore there´s quite a considerable amount of data transmitted from my computer towards Microsoft.

The real problem is that I cannot set the connection of the web-stick as "metered". That´s only the case with
WIFI-connections and Windows doesn´t recognize the web-stick as WIFI.
It´s (some sort of) modem. Windows Explorer even lists it as a CD-drive, probably due to the fact that it has an in-built
    storage function.

And if there´s a big upgrade there may be a download of up to 3 GB.
So Windows draws an incredible amount of data without me having done anything productive with my system!

The only way to avoid this would be to de-activate the respective update-service. But that wouldn´t be wise in the long run.

    My question now is:

What do you think about this?
Am I correct in suggesting that WIN 10 together with web-stick-based internet connection is a real no-go?
If yes, then changing over to a Linux distro (probably Ubuntu) would be the better way for me.
There I´ve got more and better ways of deciding whether to update, when to update and which updates to install.

Many thanks in advance for your opinion and/or suggestions.

  3. Hello everybody,

As far as the topic of Linux is concerned I have a question of a more general nature.

I´ve got two computers, a PC and a laptop.

The PC is a Lenovo H520e and the laptop is a medion Akoya E6222.

The PC has WIN8.1 Home (64bit) and the laptop has WIN7 (64bit) as operating system.

What I want to do is turn both the PC and the laptop into dual-boot systems.
The second OS should be Linux Ubuntu, preferably 14.04LTS (64bit).

    My question now is:

Could there be any danger or risk for the respective hardware when using a Linux-driven
system on a PC/laptop that originally was sold with a pre-installed version of Microsoft´s operating-system?
I mean is Linux alright for existing motherboard,RAM, fans etc?

I just want to be on the safe side before applying any changes.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

  4. Hi Xilo,

so nice to hear from you again. I hope you´re well and everything is fine for you.

Thanks for your reply and thanks also for the links you provided.

I´m going to look into them and hopefully there will be backup programmes suitable for my purposes amongst them.

I wish you a happy new year with much success and of course health.

    Greetings

  5. Hello everybody,

I´ve got a question concerning system backup of a dual-boot system.

Currently I´ve got WIN 8.1 home (64bit) installed on my computer. I´m thinking of changing that to a dual-boot system (WIN 8.1 + Ubuntu) on the same disk (HD). On different partitions of course.

Now I´m looking for a backup programme capable of creating system backups in such a way that my two operating systems would be saved and could easily be restored to the original state of my disk (WIN 8.1 + Ubuntu).

Plus that backup programme should be freeware if possible.

I found Paragon Backup & Recovery 14 Free Edition and supported File Systems are:

    NTFS (v1.2, v3.0, v3.1)
    FAT16
    FAT32
    Linux Ext2FS
    Linux Ext3FS
    Linux Ext4FS
    Linux Swap
Limited read/write access to Apple HFS+ partitions
Other file systems (in the sector-by-sector mode)

    Link: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/requirements.html

My question now is: would that be the right programme for my purposes or does anyone know a backup programme that meets my demands?

In the meantime I also found an article "Freeware to Backup Windows 7 and Ubuntu Dual Boot System" which promotes Aomei Bachupper Free. There´s also a reference to WIN 8.1 + Ubuntu.

    Link: http://www.backup-utility.com/res/backup-windows-7-ubuntu-dual-boot-system-4348.html

    Thanks a lot in advance.

  6. Hej dala,

    säkerhets-uppdateringar.

  7. Hello alltogether,

I´ve got a question about using a UMTS-stick as far as windows 10 is concerned and I wonder if there´s anybody out there who might be able to give me some advice.

At present I´m using a web stick which I purchased at Aldi. The maker is actually Huawei (HUAWEI E1550 HSDPA USB Stick).
My operating system is windows 8.1 (64bit) and the stick just works fine.

    To be more precise:
I´ve got a flatrate (5 GB highspeed per month, after that just low download rate). So there´s a data quota of about 170 MB per day. With these parameters I´m very happy as the data quota seems really sufficient for me.

The thing is: when upgrading to windows 10 there won´t be the possibility of declining software updates, so they´re going to be mandatory. There might be the possibility of receiving updates nearly each and every day.

My operating system however recognizes my web-stick as LAN-connection and thus there´s no possibility of rendering the connection as "metered".
Which means that all updates will be downloaded and installed. My fear is that windows 10 will be eating up the bulk of my 5 GB (per month) without me having had any real use of them.

    My question now is:
Does anybody know a solution to the problem of getting my system to recognize my web-stick as something that can be set to "metered"?

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Greetings

  8. Hi everybody,

I´ve got a massive problem which keeps annoying me for some time now. That´s windows-explorer crashes.
This is reflected in the fact that all desktop icons - including those in the task bar -  vanish for about three seconds. Then the appear again.

I´ve been looking around the web for a while now and learned that I´m not the only one suffering from that problem. Yet none of the methods I encountered helped me at all. Now I´m at my wit´s end.

What I´ve done up up to now:

    1.) sfc /scannow:  everything o.k.
2.) searching for problems with malwarebytes /SuperAntiSpyware:  everthing o.k.
3.) Microsoft windows-tool for removing malicious software:  everything o.k.
4.) hijack this: couldn´t find anything wrong
5.) error reporting executed by WIN-system:  I´ve saved everything in a data file (see attachment)
    6.) autoruns: I´ve de-activated shell-extensions of third-party-tools: had no effect whatsoever
    7.) I´ve deactivated spybot S&D
    8.) I´ve de-installed classic shell

By reading the error report (created by windows) I´ve learned that there were different trouble-event names:
"AppHangB1" and "APPCRASH". One time there was "BEX64".

As error module name there was:
    "DEVRTL.dll", "SDECon64.dll", "StackHash_8a21" or "ClassicStartMenuDLL.dll".
"DEVRTL.dll" seems to be the most frequent one.

Funny thing though: Once there were two consecutive days with no crashes at all. But this was an exception. Normally the explorer crashes 2 to 3 times a day.

Perhaps there´s someone who could help me with my problem????

    Many thanks in advance.

  9. Hi altogether,

I am using WIN8.1 update (64bit) on my PC.

Now I´m looking for a webcam. I´ve got no special use for it in mind. So it doesn´t have to be the latest and most expensive

gadget. I just like to have one.

The only prerequisites are that it has to be compatible with WIN8.1 and it should have a built-in microphone.

As to the price I thought it shouldn´t exceed 30 Euros or 34 US$ or 23 British Pounds.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

  10. Hi Xilo,

nice to hear from you again.

I tried several versions of firefox - with the same results. It´s  the same with firefox 33.0 beta as well.

It seems it´s  not a matter of stability but rather a matter of principle. All versions 32 plus won´t  gain access to the cache as the cache-backend has been altered.

The only thing to do is to wait until someone writes a pogramme that takes the new situation into account.

But thanks for contacting me again.

    Have a nice weekend

    Best regards

  11. Hello everybody,

I´ve got an odd problem, perhaps there´s someone out there who can help me.

I am using firefox 32 beta at the moment. There´s an add-on which is called "cache-viewer 0.7.6".
I installed it recently in order to have easy access to my browser cache. Yet it remains empty. So I tried the programme "Mozilla Cache View" by nirsoft. The same results, no access whatsoever.
I know that the cache is located in "Users...... AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox....". So I know the correct path for the right settings.
However when trying to gain access to the path manually by using the explorer I am successful. So the path is correct.

I contacted Camp Firefox and they informed me that there is a new cache-backend in firefox as of version 32.
So third-party programmes cannot gain access to the old API.

    My question is now:
Is there anybody who kwows of a programme that is able to list my browser cache entries and works with the new firefox-versions?

    Any comments are highly appreciated.

Thank you very much in advance

    Rosika   ^_^

    P.S.: System: WIN 8.1, 64bit.
    Firefox: 32.0 beta

  12. Hello Xilo,

Thanks to your suggestion (I wouldn´t have thought of that possibility) I downloaded firefox 30.0 beta portable and installed it on a USB drive.

I installed three different themes in addition to the default one and restated firefox several times.

And believe it or not  my selected theme remains set.

Let´s hope it´ll stay that way. At least it looks good. (I have hope again.)

Thank you very much, Xilo, you helped me a lot.

    Have a nice evening.

    Best wishes and greetings from

    Rosika

  13. Hi Xilo!

So nice to hear from you again. I hope you are well and everything is fine.

Up and until now I haven´t tried beta 30.0. I really didn´t  think of that, but it´s  worth a shot.

I´ve installed a variety of themes. The problem is prevalent with all of them. But if you want to try you might use "Echinaceas" and "My Garden Tulips".

In the meantime I´m going to try beta 30.0.

    Thank you very much.

  14. Hello altogether,

I wonder if anybody could help me with my latest problem. It´s  a rather annoying one.

I am a regular user of mozilla firefox. In order to get a bit variation I´ve installed different themes according to the time of year, seasons etc.

What happens now is that whenever I close firefox and reopen it again the theme I´ve set isn´t active any more and replaced by the standard theme.

It happens from time to time that some of my installed add-ons have vanished too. This however is rather seldom compared to the re-setting of my themes.

I know this is a rather tricky one but perhaps anybody has an idea .....

    Thanks in advance

    Greetings

  15. Hi Xilo,

Oh, sorry to have bothered you for no good reason.

At the moment I fortunately have no problem. I just wanted to let you know that my laptop has been repaired and that the problem we discussed April 13 is now solved.

CPU usage is within normal limits now and everything seems to be just fine.

In my posting April 14 I said:

As soon as I get my notebook back I´ll let you know.

And that´s all I wanted to do, so you know that this matter can be regarded as solved.

I apologize for any inconvenience and wish you a very nice weekend.

  16. Hello altogether,

    I purchased a new PC with WIN8 (64-bit) preinstalled.

Up and until now I´ve used a laptop with WIN7 Home Premium (64-bit). With the help of O&O DiskImage Professional 7 I´ve created a system image backup (OS, installed programmes..... everything).

This programme supports M.I.R. (Machine Independent Restoration), which means that the image can be restored to a different hardware environment (altered motherboard, cpu ...).

What I´d  like to do now is to restore this backup to my new PC but without having to get rid of my installed WIN8.

I´d very much like to have the choice of two installed operating systems.

In order to achieve this goal I thought I might be able to do the following:

1.) create a new partition (sufficiently big enough for my WIN7 backup) with EaseUs Partition Master

2.) install my WIN7 backup to this partition

3.) configure the bootloader with EasyBCD so that it´ll be able to handle two different operating systems.

I wonder whether it really works this way.

Perhaps anyone can tell me what he or she thinks of it. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance

    Rosika

    P.S.:

    My BIOS is an UEFI-system.

My first thought was to switch to "CSM enabled"  and opt for "UEFI+Legacy" in order not to encounter any difficulties with either of the 2 operating systems.

  17. Hi Xilo,

    nice to hear from you.

Alas I don´t  think that´s  what it is.

Up and until now I tried several things, but nothing helped.

I restored my system to a much earlier point in time by using O&O DiskImage. Thus I was able to restore everything, that is operating system, programmes, personal setings.

But the problem with unusually heavy cpu-workload remained.

I even installed WIN7 from scratch. Here again the same phenomenon.

The thing is it really looks as if there´s  some hardware problem. As there´s  even some warranty time left I´m  going to have my laptop repaired now.

Thanks for your help and advice anyway.

As soon as I get my notebook back I´ll let you know. In the meantime unfortunately I haven´t  got any internet access.

  18. Hallo zusammen,

    Rosika

  19. Hello UCanFixIt,

    thanks for your latest reply.

That configuration is a far cry from the standard win configuration I was using for comparison.

I just wanted to add that running the virtual machine was my last attempt regarding the problem of getting Java finally started. I tried that only yesterday.

Otherwise I would have told you about it of course.

While exchanging views concerning Java I was using my WIN7 Home Premium operating system (SP1).

So I think we dindn´t do anything wrong there.

    Greetings
